DIY – Installing Cabinet Hardware

Ready to transform the look of your kitchen or bathroom with a small change that makes a big impact? Consider installing cabinet hardware on your plain cabinets. There are so many options to choose from to fit your personal style. You can use knobs, pulls or a combination of the two. Regardless of your choice, the steps involved are simple and you can have it done in no time.

Materials needed:

-Power drill

-Drill bit (size depends on hardware screw)

-Cabinet hardware

-Cabinet door hardware installation template (find at any home improvement store)

-Pencil

-Scotch tape

FIRST, PREPARE:

It’s sort of a given, but make sure you really like the hardware that you’ve bought before you start drilling holes in your cabinet door! Is the size proportionate to the door/drawer? Does the finish you have chosen go with the rest of the space? It’s all up to personal preference here, but take the time to pick out something that fits the space as well as your tastes.

Whether your priority is a great deal, awesome reviews, or unique finds- you can snag great knobs and pulls anywhere from a general hardware store, to Hobby Lobby, to second hand stores and yard sale salvages, to Ebay, Etsy, and Amazon.

BEFORE YOU DRILL:

Find a good area to place the cabinet hardware. It should be placed in a spot that feels comfortable to open the door/drawer from. Then use the template to mark the holes you will drill. The template ensures that the holes will be drilled in the same spot on each door/drawer. The scotch tape is helpful in that it can help prevent the cabinet from splitting where you drill. Make sure the drill bit that you are using will fit through the hole of the template. The hole should accommodate the size of the screw that came with the hardware.

GO TIME:

Drill your holes! Do one door at a time and install the hardware first to make sure it looks good before you drill ALL of your holes! Once you’re done drilling the holes, remove the scotch tape and fasten the hardware to the cabinet using the screws provided. And that’s it! Your cabinet makeover is complete!

In just an afternoon, you can upgrade your space and make it feel personalized. From modern to traditional or classic to kitschy- you can say a lot with this quick and easy DIY.
